...O_O never thought you have a lot of otaku fans here, my friend...
I do watch a lot of anime, but that's it. I don't go with the manga, I photograph cosplays BUT I don't do cosplays, I'm mainly focused on shoujo/seinen/slice-of-life genre (nothing with those power-power ninja whatever stuffs), I can't speak Japanese (though I understand some parts of it without needing to read the subtitles but I can't speak with it), I'm proud Filipino and I never try accusing myself that I'm Japanese/half-Japanese, being a nurse I know much of these maladaptive behaviors and will not even try becoming one.
so pretty much, I'm juz leveling myself on the "anime enthusiast", and not in otaku stuff. I can live without anime, but mostly I watch it for "hobby" purposes. [since only TWD and NatGeo/History/Discovery are the better things worth watching in TV...and CNN]
Though I don't go giving the "negative" meaning of otaku anyway~~~
in Japan, they place it as "hen" or the "weird of the weird" derogatory term, but well, as how I define it, "otaku" are juz kids (and sometimes adults) with hyper and euphoric passion to anime/manga/Japanese-culture...pretty much you can't blame 'em. It's like when you ask me what's on my mind when you say Japan, I firstly say "technology" on it (Sony, Nissan, Mitsubishi, etc); while otakus would say "anime/manga" and those kinda.
guess in the long term of this, we juz have to let 'em be.
Some poeple think of otaku as a demeaning term, so they will vote no. I do not think of it in a negative context, even though I'm aware and familiarized with/of some of the most extremely disturbing aspects of otaku-ness.
It's a person who sits in front of his/her computer all the time and plays videogames or does similar stuff. So it's someone who's really nerd-ish and doesn't have any social life. But that's actually only one meaning. 'Otaku' also refers to a person who is really obsessed of anime/manga and spends a lot of time and money on it.
