Both. I think it has to do with the frequency and content above all. *As in half naked selfie int he bathroom 10000x a day vs, I just got a haircut selfie*

Selfies are fine. It's the daily selfies and multiple selfies at a time that bug me. Especially with the people that post a selfie from the same angle/same expression (just a different day) every time. Drives me nuts!

depends on how they're done. maybe on da they're self-exploration, but on most social media they're narcissism.

I would have to say it really depends on the person. Most empty minded people think about appearance before inner quality. But those who do selfies who are not self centered, find it to be a way of confirming beauty, not that they were self conscious in the first place but to appreciate themselves.

My opinion is that some selfies can be good. They can be a good tool for photographers to learn from, the mechanics and the image aspects.  At a certain point it becomes too much Me-Me!  If they aren't for some this is my life aspect, and there is no noticeable improvement in the quality, then they have gone over the line.  At that point they should be posting on FB or such.

I have used a "selfie" to get shots of people behind me.  It's just another tool in a pro photojournalist's bag of tricks.  But that's what I do, where I learned my craft.  A working photojournalist has vastly different needs to those who do creative photography.  "Me-Me" photography is discouraged, the photog isn't the story.

That's my story, anyway, and I'm sticking to it!  ;-)

I use them to build my confidence. I have low self esteem

Self-exploitation/exploration seem very different.
I guess both are best measured in consequences -- self-promotion, creative evolution, mortification.
It's not my place to judge intent/result, as an avid student of this form, and a devout nonparticipant.

narcissism definitely----but narcissism itself is an understatement. I would rather go to say "seeking attention" and "self-exploitation" even.

I mean, it can never be "self-exploration" since you only have one face for a ton of photos.:iconmingplz: so what else there'd be a reason for selfie but to say like you wanna market your face onto the social media, in the hopes of praises and sugarcoated-comments that they all expect to hear.

well, they got it.

Narcissism.  But I happen to like narcissists. :D  Whats' wrong with being self confident and loving your own face and body?  Nothing as far as I am concerned.  We all love the selfies too.  LOL  They are fun (unless they get too trashy.)

I'd say it's control of your image and how you want others to see you.

I'd say it really depends on the person taking the picture; are they learning anything from the process and can you see that reflected in future works.

Oh, and yeah, Duck face = narcissism.

We'll all remember what we looked like and what we valued when we were younger.  ^_^

There are plenty of Narcissists out there, but those who do selfies for self exploration or as their own model while they learn... good on them.
